Relief sculpture of the Great Wall of China

The ancient relief sculptural technique involves creating 3D elements that remain attached to a 2D background of the same material, resulting in sculpted motifs that are raised from the surface. Bas-relief is when the motifs are only slightly raised above the surface. With a revival in appreciation for tradition and handmade crafts, these techniques are once again flourishing and being rediscovered by a new generation of artists and craftsmen.

The incredible artist highlighted in this video appeared on one of our social media feeds and while we were unable to find out more about him, we had to share this mural he created of the Great Wall of China. Enjoy!

Kellie Pereira – Cardinal Portrait Bas Relief Sculpture Process – Instructional Video

relief No Comments »

Hello everyone!

Steve and I had taken a poll on Instagram in order to see if you all were interested in clay sculpture related videos. Producing a clay maquette is often (but not always) step one for starting any stone sculpture. The majority of people thought that this would be relevant information… so here you go!

This is a video showing the process of creating a low relief of a Northern Cardinal bird.

After producing a clay model, mold and a final cast in plaster, one could easily use it as a reference for a stone sculpture, or set up a pointing machine for exact translation into stone.

This is not a commercial plug, but you can view the final plaster casts we create here: https://www.greenpointstone.com/relief-sculpture. As you can see, every minute mark shows up in white plaster, so if that is your final material, it is helpful to use a lighter-tonality clay so you can perceive shadow contrast more clearly.

We will be creating more long-form tutorials like this for our Patreon subscribers, so if this content interests you, please look into joining our community here: https://www.patreon.com/Sculpting_Stone.

Thanks for watching!

Relief Sculpture

[Anchor Lead]

A relief sculpture depicting scenes from a market day in a rural town in 1960s Korea has been fully restored. It’s a fascinating glimpse at the fast developing country’s recent past. Take a look.

[Pkg]

A black relief sculpture occupies a corner of a middle school campus. Scenes of a market day in a rural town unfold endlessly with every step. The relief is titled “Women on a Market Day.” It was sculpted by the late Youn Byoung-suk.

[Soundbite] Lee Gyu-seok(Curator, Gyeongnam Art Museum) : “Relief works typically describe a monumental theme. It’s unusual to see relief sculptures depicting the everyday lives of common people.”

Youn gained international fame through his mosaic works using shells commonly found in any fishing village. This particular artwork was installed at Sungji Girls’ Middle School in Masan in 1969 when Youn was an art teacher there.

[Soundbite] Lee Mi-seon(Principal, Sungji Girls’ Middle School) : “We restored the artwork with the hope of having our students experience this memorable space that all of our graduates remember.”

The artwork survived for 50 years and through renovation work, has been recently restored to its original form. People of all walks of life come alive in the 42 meter relief sculpture.

[Soundbite] Sungji Girls’ Middle School Student : “It can look stiff due to the black color and the stone-like texture, but I felt it was rather heartwarming.”

The engravings of merry scenes at a rural market in Korea’s 1960s continue to interact with the students even after some 5 decades have passed.
